Stonehenge
Stonehenge is a place with spezial stone circles. It`s very, very fascinating and interesting and it looks very good every time and in each weather.
Stonehenge is 13 km north of Salisbury in Southengland, in the county of Wiltshire. It`s the most famous Megalithmonument of England and the most important prehistoric building of Europe. And it`s the most mysterious building of Europe – it`s a miracle.
There are a lot of questions and theories – but only a few answers.
The history
Stonehenge is about 5000 years old. We know this, because in the Bronze Age the Romans broke some stones of the monument and some stones fell down automaticaly. 1958 people put up this stones again. When they did that, they found engravings of tools, they used in the Stone Age(1500 b. Chr.).
We know only little parts of the history of Stonehenge. We can imagine the way of the putting up, because in the 2000th century people tried to do that without modern machines.
The people who built Stonehenge didn’t built everything at the same time. Probably they started with only one stonecircle for ceremonies. It`s in the middel of a mound and a ditch.
The nation who built Stonehenge must have had big businesstreats and also a big setlement in this area. Because many stones came from areas far away.
Around the Monument there are about 400 Tumuli, where they found splinters of the stones ofthe Monument.
Design
Stonehenge has got four circles.
The diameter of the first stonecircle is 30 m. In this circle they used very big stonepillers. Those pillers are combined with other stones, which were put on top of them.
Inside this circle is a second circle and inside this second circle there is a half circle with combined stones. Inside this half circle is the altarstone.
The material of the different stones and circles is always different.
Outside of the stonecircles there is a ditch which has a diameter of 104 m. Near to the ditch there is a mound with a ring of 56 holes: called Aubrey Holes. John Aubrey is the name of the man who found this holes. Maybe those holes were used in firefunerals.
One side of the circles is open. There is a processionsway, it`s 23 m wide and 3 km long. On both sides of this way there is a mound, too. Near by the entrance, there is a slaugther stone were people probably sacrificed animals. In the processionway stood two Heel Stones. They used them probably for observating the sun.

Differend kinds of theories
We don`t know wath the nation thought, who built Stonehenge. We can only guess. Probobly they used it for their religious ceremonies and funerals or as a calender.
Astonomy in Stonehenge
Since the early 18 th. century we know, that you can use the axis of the circle for astronomic observations.
There is a special point to watch sunrise and sunset, on June 21st, the longest day of the year. Research of Stonehenge and other stonecircles in Graitbritan showed: Stonehenge is not built as an observatory. The reason, why they built Stonehenge, was not intrest in astronomy but in symbolism and in religious ceremonies. They combined Their ceremonies with the sun and the moon.
Druids
These stonecircles were a temple of the Druids. That was the result of John Aubrey, 300 years ago. This is wrong. Because when the Romans conquested Britan, Stonehenge was already 2000 years old and already a ruin. Besides, the Druids haven`t got own temples. Today we know, that they hold up their ceremonies in woodearings. It could be, that the druids had got their knowledge about astronomy from Stanehenge which they taught their descendants.
Stonehenge and the perfect use of it is still a mysterous secret.
